Neoteric Hovercraft Golf Cart on “Big Kenny’s Crank It Up Garage”

Before we give you the back-story on Phil Yastrow’s Hovercraft Golf Cart, take a look at how Neoteric Hovercraft are media magnets, just like Bubba’s Hover

Phil Yastrow bought his Hovercraft Golf Cart last September … and now he’s appearing with it on Big & Rich’s Big Kenny’s Crank It Up Garage, premiering this Thursday, July 8, on Circle TV. Watch the trailer for a quick glimpse of Phil’s unusual replica of Bubba Watson’s BW1 Hovercraft …

Although the episode featuring Phil’s hovercraft was the first one filmed, we’re not absolutely certain it will be the first one aired. But even if you have to watch several episodes to see it, it’ll be worth it. Big Kenny’s Crank It Up Garage website says, “Big Kenny and his sidekick Charlie Pennachio find and meet the builders, crafters and tinkerers of the craziest motorized “projects” you’ve ever seen. Featuring custom cars, motorcycles, boats, planes and a range of other weird, wacky and interesting modes of transportation, Kenny and Charlie chase down their authentic fascination of all things custom.

Here, Phil and Big Kenny fly the hovercraft during the filming ...

Now let’s start at the beginning …

Remember that Neoteric was chosen by Bubba Watson to create the first and only hovercraft golf cart in the world. An extremely limited number of replicas were made available to the public. So, you’d think the only reason to buy one of these is to play golf, right? … wrong!

Golf was the last thing on Phil Yastrow’s mind when he bought his Neoteric Hovercraft Cart. Phil is a retired mechanical / electronics engineer who lives in Osage Beach, Missouri. After seeing the Bubba’s Hover video and learning about Neoteric and Founder/President Chris Fitzgerald, Phil decided he couldn’t do without one. He says, “I live on Lake of the Ozarks and I got the notion that I could avoid rough water by flying over it.”

Here’s Phil last September when he came to Neoteric to pick up his hovercraft and undergo flight training ...

But Phil’s creativity had only just begun. He decided that his hovercraft golf cart had a strong resemblance to Fred Flintstone’s vehicle, the Flintmobile, which is called a Canopysaurus …

So Phil decided to turn his hovercraft into the “Brontocraft”. His nephew, CJ Patterson, designed the Brontocraft wrap, and here’s what his hovercraft golf cart looks like today …

Phil is no novice when it comes to being on water. He explains, “Water skiing was a huge part of my life. I built and owned two competition water ski lakes in Windsor, Colorado starting in 1989. I competed and became a world rated official. I ‘retired’ from competitive skiing around 2014 and got a place at Lake of the Ozarks in 2016.”

But being on water and other surfaces in his hovercraft is truly a novelty. Phil says, “It’s enabling me to have fun and be unique in a way that other vehicles couldn’t do. I own two other boats and I’ll use them when the time is right and I will fly the Brontocraft when I want the thrill of flying. As an electrical and mechanical engineer, I am mesmerized by its technology and the design.”

Phil has also made it his goal to fly his hovercraft in 48 states. He says "I have friends and family in almost every state and the thrill of going places is unbearable!"

Here’s a map of the states he’s flown in so far …

Check back often because there's lots more to come about Phil's hovercraft ventures across the United States!

Don’t miss out on seeing Phil and his Hovercraft Golf Cart on television! Be sure to watch the premiere episode of Big Kenny’s Crank It Up Garage on Circle TV this Thursday. If you aren’t familiar with Circle TV, see how to access it here.

Update June 2025: Unfortunately, Circle TV has since shut down, and is no long broadcasting. You can, however, find Big Kenny's Crank It Up Garage at this link.

Star attraction at Voyageur Winter Carnival: Neoteric Hovercraft rides

Canada’s Voyageur Winter Carnival at Fort William Historical Park in Thunder Bay is the largest winter event in Northwestern Ontario. And Fort William Historical Park is one of the largest living history attractions in North America, bringing visitors from all over the world.

The Park’s 2017 Winter Carnival, known as Family Day Weekend, took place Feb. 18-20 and, as always, offered a weekend full of fun with a giant snow maze, tubing and sliding hills, skating, winter and carnival games, historical activities and indoor & outdoor entertaining. But something new was announced on their website this year ...

New this year – Hovercraft Rides!
Take an exhilarating ride and experience the Kamanistiquia River like you never have before –
on a Neoteric Hovercraft!
Yes! Neoteric Hovercraft rides were the main attraction at the 2017 year’s Winter Carnival. In the past, helicopter rides were sometimes offered, but this year it was decided that hovercraft would be more exciting. Emily Carr, Communications Officer with Fort Williams Historical Park said, “New this year, we’re excited to have hovercraft rides. Visitors will be able to experience the Kamanistiquia River from a whole new exhilarating perspective. These hovercraft can go on ice and snow and take people down the Kam.

The rides were piloted by Neoteric Founder/President Chris Fitzgerald and Vice President Steve Stafford on a 6-passenger Neoteric HoverTrek and a 4-passenger Neoteric HoverGolf Cart – the official replica of Bubba’s Hover, which was designed and manufactured by Neoteric.

On the first day of the Winter Carnival, visitors begin to line up for their first hovercraft ride.
People who took rides on the hovercraft were even more excited after the ride than they were before they launched. Sarah McKinnon, who attended the event with her husband and daughter, said, “The hovercraft was super cool. It was a lot of fun. I’m surprised by how fun it was actually.”

Chris Fitzgerald gives his passengers a few spins on the snow and ice-covered
Kamanistiquia River in Neoteric’s Bubba’s Hover.
After Thunder Bay’s John Lawson and his daughter Myla took a ride, he said, “There’s nothing quite like it. It’s a unique experience and I think everyone should give it a shot. Floating on a cushion of air isn’t something you do every day and it’s nice that the park had the opportunity to have this out here.”

Neoteric Vice President Steve Stafford flies a family down the Kamanistiquia River in a Neoteric HoverTrek.

The hovercraft rides were definitely the star of the show and got a big "thumbs up" from everyone!
Today, the final day of the Voyageur Winter Carnival, Neoteric President Chris Fitzgerald reported in. “I wish I had a way to capture all the positive comments we’ve gotten. One fellow came back specifically to tell us that it was the best ride of his entire life. Kids love it, as well. I spent time with them to explain how hovercraft work and they really seem to appreciate this.”

“Everyone says we have the best job in the world, taking people for fun rides”, Fitzgerald concluded.

Neither snow nor ice nor water hazards and sand traps are an obstacle for a Neoteric Hovercraft.
Here, the Neoteric Bubba’s Hover gives another group of passengers their first hovercraft flight.
At the close of the highly successful 2017 Voyageur Winter Carnival, the two Neoteric hovercraft are loaded and ready for their long trek from Ontario back to Indiana ...

#Throwback Thursday Hovercraft Video: Vintage Neoteric Hovercraft

Today is Throwback Thursday #TBT and it’s a meme especially suited to Neoteric. As the world’s original light hovercraft manufacturer, we have decades of history to share!

On this Throwback Thursday, let’s have a glimpse of Neoteric’s third decade in business. The 1980s established Neoteric Hovercraft as a global entity as we gained customers from across the world – India, China, Japan and many other nations. And intensive research and development produced several new Neoteric models, among them the LeMere and the Neova II.

The early 1980s were a precursor of our Bubba’s Hover days, as Neoteric craft gained international fame in commercial productions – they were featured in TV ads for Canada’s Labatt’s Beer, Germany’s Lord Extra Cigarettes and Brazil’s Hollywood Cigarettes.

Here’s the Labatt’s Beer commercial, filmed on Lake Isabella in California. When ordinary boats are just too ordinary for the job, it’s Neova II hovercraft to the rescue! …

When filming the Lord Extra commercial on California’s Lake Big Bear in 1983, the Neoteric hovercraft stole the show – and not much has changed since! ...

You can read the full history of Neoteric Hovercraft here.

Now it’s time to look forward and get a glimpse of what a hovercraft can add to your future! Find out how you can steal the show ...

After the filming, Gary said, "The hovercraft was the main feature of the entire episode. Tim Shaw (the show's host) rode with me on several test flights, where we spun around on Lake Las Vegas and then flew up the beach toward the cameras. On the first take, I was to run perpendicularly up the sloped beach and stop right in front of multiple TV cameras. No problem - perfect landing! We filmed this approach four separate times at my fastest possible speed and each time I landed almost exactly on the same spot."

Bubba Claus ‘raps’ his Christmas gift – on his Neoteric Hovercraft Golf Cart

Bubba Watson has released a new Christmas-themed rap video as a gift to his fans, featuring his Neoteric-manufactured hovercraft golf cart, the BW1. And, like his viral video Bubba’s Hover, it’s taking the media by storm … although to somewhat mixed reviews.

The UK’s Daily Mail wrote, “Every rapper should have a cool set of wheels – and Watson’s golf buggy certainly oozes class!”

But the Golf Channel says, “Bubba Claus brings joy to your heart, pain to your ears.”

The Washington Post reported, “Bubba Watson knows the best way to offer a Christmas gift … he breaks out his hovercraft, making sure to remind everyone that he owns this awesome vehicle in the chorus:

“I just touched down in my hovercraft
I bet you wanna know what’s in my bag
Is it golf clubs or a bag of toys?
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Bubba Claus!”

Is this an instant replay of the recent Browns/Bengals game, where fans loved the hovercraft but not the game? Watch the video, “Bubba Claus – The Single” then leave a comment and let us know what you think!

Cleveland Browns: 0 … Hovercraft Halftime Show: Touchdown!

Over the weekend, Windy Knoll Golf Club’s two Neoteric HoverGolf™ Carts were the star of the show at the Cleveland Browns-Cincinnati Bengals game at FirstEnergy Stadium. Windy Knoll was the first golf course in the U.S. to own official replicas of Bubba's Hover, Bubba Watson's BW1 hovercraft golf cart.

Steve Stafford, flight instructor at Hovercraft Training Centers, organized the hovercraft halftime show and described the action:  “At halftime, we fired up the hovercraft and flew around the field. Next, we each raced a passenger around some flags to the other end, where they got out and donned pink bunny suits,” he reported. “Then they both got back in, were hovered back to the starting point, where they each had to change bunny suits with their partner. After switching suits, both partners were flown back to the other end zone. The first one back got first choice of a gift held by each of the mascots. Both gifts were all-expense paid trips to upcoming football events.”

No fumbles in the hovercraft action! But the game itself was another story. Fans and media alike praised the hovercraft halftime show over the game.

The Wall Street Journal, in “Johnny Football Gets Deflated” wrote: “At halftime, people in pink bunny costumes raced hovercraft on the field. This was the highlight of the afternoon.”

A fan Tweeted, “Hovercraft race at halftime in Cleveland. It is approximately 400 times more interesting than the football game so far.”

The Washington Post  reported the live action, writing at halftime, “I am sure hovercraft racing at halftime will make fans forget all about what they just witnessed,” then after the game reported, “Alas, not even the hovercraft could help turn the momentum Cleveland’s way in the second half.”

In the end, the Bengals rolled past the Browns in a 30 – 0 rout. But the Neoteric HoverGolf™ Carts were a definite winner!

Enjoy a few photos below of the hovercraft scoring points …

Are Hovercraft Going to the Dogs?

When Neoteric President Chris Fitzgerald boarded his HoverTrek™ to participate in the Hoverclub of America’s Wabash Cannonball Cruise, he really ‘put on the dog’ – his 3-year-old poodle mix, named Zoe! (But be forewarned: if you refer to Zoe as Fitzgerald’s “pet”, you’ll be barking up the wrong tree; she prefers “HoverQueen”) …

“It’s raining cats & dogs!
Bring the HoverQueen her royal umbrella!”
said Zoe as she withstood the weather.
This was Zoe’s first hovercraft cruise and she thoroughly enjoyed it, even during the rain. As befitting hover royalty, Zoe wore her earplugs without the least complaint as she cruised the historic Wabash River. She was so relaxed, the HoverQueen even napped on the return trip to Vincennes, Indiana, even though the river, at flood stage, was moving more than 5 mph.

But HoverQueen Zoe Fitzgerald isn’t the only canine who revels in hover cruising. Dogs may be man’s best friend but poodles, in particular, prefer hovercraft. You’ve all met Joey Meyers, the Official Hovercraft Training Centers HoverPup – a 4-year-old poodle mix …

Joey says, “I double dog dare you to have more fun in those airplanes than in my Neoteric Hovercraft!”
Zoe and Joey are simply following an historic trend – particularly in their choice of Neoteric Hovercraft. History shows that man’s best friend has always recognized the latest and greatest in vehicles. Back in 1903, when the Ford Motor Company was incorporated, a dog named Bud accompanied Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson and a mechanic named Crocker on the first U.S. transcontinental automobile trip. On their grueling ride through the rugged U.S. West - where there were no roads - Bud wore goggles during their entire journey in an open-top Winton touring car. Jackson and Crocker (and Bud) were hailed as heroes and inspired a generation of automobile enthusiasts.

In the U.S, Western Europe and China alone, there are more than 200 million households managed by dogs. Just imagine what could happen if the publicity hounds get the word out that the latest and greatest vehicle is the hovercraft - Bubba’s Hover could become Puppy’s Hover!

See what the top dogs are barking about:

Neoteric HoverGolf™ Cart stars at Southpointe Golf Club

Canonsburg, Pennsylvania’s Southpointe Golf Club, twenty minutes from Pittsburgh, is widely recognized as “the area’s finest.” So when Southpointe celebrated its 20th Anniversary this weekend, it made certain that event guests were given the greatest entertainment possible: rides on the Neoteric HoverGolf™ Cart – the official replica of Bubba Watson’s BW1, featured in Bubba’s Hover.

The Neoteric HoverGolf™ Cart soars far above ordinary golf carts.
Hovercraft Training Centers flight instructor Steve Stafford, who flew the HoverGolf™ Cart at the Southpointe event, reported, “Another successful event! I gave rides all day on a somewhat challenging area and they were perfect. Everyone was very pleased!

Nestled in rolling hills, Southpointe Golf Club was designed by world famous golf course architect Arthur Hills to make the most out of western Pennsylvania’s incredible terrain. Southpointe features a scenic course with undulating greens, natural streams and rolling fairways – the perfect landscape for a hovercraft golf cart!

People dropped in from all over for a HoverGolf™ Cart ride at Southpointe Golf Club!

Neoteric to star on NatGeo TV’s “None of the Above”

No doubt about it – the Neoteric HoverTrek™ is a media magnet! As just one example, our customer Gary Meyers and his recreational hovercraft (named “Neo”) is giving Bubba Watson and Bubba’s Hover a run for the money when it comes to celebrity status.

The National Geographic TV program None of the Above will feature Gary and Neo on an exciting episode this fall - and what a perfect place for them! On the show, the popular British host Tim Shaw, a child prodigy in science turned stunt-happy engineer, “pairs science, humor and hair-raising stunts to amaze and dumbfound. He challenges the people he meets, and the audience at home, to predict the outcome of a series of ever more spectacular experiments before uncovering the science behind the jaw-dropping outcomes.”
Gary Meyers (left) and Tim Shaw (right) gear up for some stunt hovering in Gary’s Neoteric craft on Lake Las Vegas.

Here's a great video clip of the film shoot on Nevada’s scenic Lake Las Vegas ...

The hovercraft was the main feature of the entire episode," Gary tells Neoteric. "I did a separate interview where I described the HoverTrek’s features and benefits, and I hope that my many positive comments will survive the editing process!”

Tim Shaw rode in the hovercraft with me on several “test flights” where we spun around on Lake Las Vegas and then flew up the beach toward the cameras and other participants,” Gary adds. “On the first take, I was to run perpendicularly up the sloped beach and stop right in front of multiple TV cameras. No problem – perfect landing! (Thanks to Hovercraft Training Centers, Chris Fitzgerald and Neoteric!) We filmed this approach four separate times at my fastest possible speed, and each time I landed almost exactly on the same spot.

If you’ve seen Gary’s unique hovercraft before, you’re probably wondering what happened to its custom designs. NatGeo felt his craft was so striking it might distract viewers! “I was asked to cover the Tek-Wrap logos and images so as to not distract viewers, so Neo was all white,” Gary explains.

Enjoy a few more photos of the film shoot while you wait for Gary and Neo to show you some jaw-dropping hovering this fall on NatGeo’s None of the Above. Then leave a comment below to tell us what you think and if you plan to watch the show!

PGA pros Don Law and Mike Bennett hover like Bubba at Noble 10

Bubba Watson isn’t the only golf pro to hover into the future of golf carts. The prestigious Noble Financial Capital Markets 10th Annual Equity Conference (“Noble 10”) featured the Neoteric HoverGolf Cart - the official replica of Bubba’s BWI – and PGA golf pros and famed trainers Don Law and Mike Bennett were quick to jump on board.

Don Law is founder and director of the Don Law Golf Academy, one of the largest year-round training programs in the nation, and recipient of numerous PGA awards, including Golf Professional of the Year; President’s Plaque; Junior Leader; Bill Strausbaugh and the Distinguished Service Award.

Mike Bennett is co-founder of the Stack & Tilt Academy at Club Med in Port St. Lucie, Florida, where Noble 10 took place. Since 2005, Mike’s students have won more than 50 million dollars in PGA Tour winnings.

Before their presentations at Noble 10, Don Law (left) and Mike Bennett (right) gear up to experience Bubba’s Hover firsthand ...

Neoteric’s Steve Stafford, a Hovercraft Training Centers instructor, flies the two pros over the course at Club Med.

Even with their decades of experience, after soaring in style in the HoverGolf Cart, what do you want to bet that these two golf pros will never look at the game in the same way again?

Wall Street, Club Med, Cadillac … and the Neoteric HoverGolf Cart!

The massive publicity created by Bubba’s Hover, the viral video of Bubba Watson’s BW1 hovercraft golf cart manufactured by Neoteric, has now evolved into a steadily rising level of prestige. As the world recognizes that the Neoteric HoverGolf Cart attracts major attention wherever it goes, it has definitely been going places - appearing as an attraction at charity events, grand openings, and special events of all types.

January 19-23, the HoverGolf Cart will join Wall Street executives, investors, and world business leaders at Club Med in Port St. Lucie, Florida for “the ultimate adventure in capitalism” – the Noble Financial Capital Markets 10th Annual Equity Conference. While Cadillac provides general transportation at this famed event (last year it was Porsche), Neoteric’s Steve Stafford, who is also an HTC Flight Instructor, will really get things off the ground with rides in the HoverGolf Cart.

In addition to corporate presentations, the 550 attendees and their families will enjoy every leisure activity imaginable – from sailing, paddle boarding and flying trapeze lessons, to tennis lessons with Gabriel Jaramillo and golf with the Club Med Academy and its world-famous teaching pros, who developed the Stack and Tilt golf swing technique. And, of course, hovering like Bubba in the Neoteric HoverGolf Cart!

In every way, this event is business at its best. As Mark Pinvidic, Noble’s managing partner and chief organizer of Noble 10 says, “We’re sure this one is going to score a perfect ten!”

Check in next week for event photos!
