August 6–9, 2026, was a very special weekend for Neoteric Hovercraft as we celebrated 50 years of Neoteric in Terre Haute alongside the 50th Anniversary of the Hoverclub of America.

The four-day Hovercraft Homecoming brought approximately 80 visitors to the Neoteric facility, along with hovercraft enthusiasts, pilots, builders, families and longtime friends from across the country and internationally.

 

For Neoteric, the celebration was especially meaningful because Terre Haute has been our home for five decades.

Friday Opening Ceremony

The 50th Anniversary celebration officially began Friday at noon with an opening ceremony at Fairbanks Park.  Mayor Brandon Sakbun of Terre Haute joins Chris Fitzgerald and members of the hovercraft community during the opening ceremony celebrating 50 years of Neoteric Hovercraft and the Hoverclub of America.

 

Among the special guests attending the ceremony was Brandon Sakbun, Mayor of the City of Terre Haute, who joined the hovercraft community in celebrating this historic milestone.

Also attending was Eric Hunt, federal agent representative for the State of Indiana, along with members of the Hoverclub of America, hovercraft enthusiasts, community representatives and other special guests.

Mayor Sakbun's participation was especially meaningful as Terre Haute has been the home of Neoteric Hovercraft for approximately 50 years and played an important role in the early history of the Hoverclub of America.

 

80 Visitors Tour the Neoteric Facility

One of the highlights of the weekend was welcoming approximately 80 visitors to the Neoteric Hovercraft facility.

Guests had the opportunity to tour our facility, see Neoteric hovercraft up close, learn about our manufacturing process and hear stories about the company's five decades of hovercraft development.

For many visitors, returning to Neoteric was a special experience. Some had been part of the hovercraft community for decades, while others were seeing the Neoteric facility for the first time.

Our team was proud to open the doors and share our workplace, our history and our passion for hovercraft with everyone who attended.

Wallace II, Neoteric long-term associate and educator extraordinaire was a workshop presenter at Hover Rally.  “Foam Plates, Motors, and Props, Oh My!”, A Kid’s Learning Activity, introducing the next generation to hovercraft building.  A special thanks to James for working diligently to build our next generation of hover enthusiasts!

      

Hovercraft Return to the Wabash River

8^th Aug 2026 morning, hovercraft operated from Fairbanks Park on the Wabash River to Clinton Indiana, bringing the sights and sounds of hovercraft back to the same area that played such an important role in the early history of the Hoverclub of America.

The 50th Anniversary Hoverally included hovercraft operations, river cruises, demonstrations, technical presentations, historical presentations, social activities and opportunities for members to reconnect.

Seeing so many hovercraft operating together on the Wabash River made the 50th Anniversary especially memorable.

Local and Statewide Media Cover the Celebration

The historic gathering also attracted significant                                                                             media attention.

WTHI-TV News 10 visited and covered the 50th Anniversary Hoverally at Fairbanks Park. The station highlighted the history of the Hoverclub of America and the large gathering of hovercraft enthusiasts in Terre Haute.

WTWO-TV also visited the event and covered the weekend's activities.

The celebration attracted attention beyond Terre Haute as well. An Indianapolis PBS television crew traveled to Terre Haute to document the 50th Anniversary celebration and the history of Neoteric Hovercraft and the Hoverclub of America.

Local Tribune-Star newspaper and community media also followed the event, helping share Terre Haute's unique connection to hovercraft with a wider audience.

The media coverage was a wonderful recognition of the importance of the anniversary—not only for Neoteric and the Hoverclub, but also for the history of Terre Haute.

Honoring Chris Fitzgerald

During the celebration, Mayor Sakbun recognized Chris Fitzgerald, founder of Neoteric Hovercraft, with an official City of Terre Haute proclamation. The proclamation honored Chris for his vision, ingenuity, leadership and lasting contributions to hovercraft technology and the Terre Haute community.

A particularly meaningful part of the celebration was recognizing Chris Fitzgerald, founder of Neoteric Hovercraft and an important figure in the early history of the Hoverclub of America.

Mayor Sakbun's office recognized Chris Fitzgerald, founder of Neoteric Hovercraft, with an official City of Terre Haute proclamation. The proclamation honored Chris for his vision, ingenuity, leadership and lasting contributions to hovercraft technology and the Terre Haute community.

The City officially proclaimed 8^th Aug 2026 as “Chris Fitzgerald Day” in recognition of his remarkable achievements and five decades of contributions to the hovercraft industry and Terre Haute.

The opening ceremony marked the beginning of four days of activities celebrating 50 years of Neoteric, 50 years of the Hoverclub of America and the continuing legacy of hovercraft in Terre Haute.

The August 6–9 Homecoming was more than a celebration of hovercraft.

It was a reunion of people who have shared a passion for hovercraft for generations.

Longtime members returned to Terre Haute to reconnect with old friends. New enthusiasts had the opportunity to meet experienced pilots and builders. Families enjoyed watching hovercraft operate on the river, while visitors learned more about the technology and                                              the people behind it.

 

After 50 years, the excitement surrounding hovercraft is still very much alive.

Sugar Creek Cruise — Hoverclub of America (Sept 27, 2025) By Neoteric Hovercraft

On September 27, 2025, hovercraft enthusiasts gathered at Reeder Park in Montezuma, Indiana for the long-awaited Sugar Creek Cruise hosted by the Hoverclub of America. The day was a perfect blend of nostalgic cruising through covered-bridge country, technical camaraderie, and hands-on demonstrations of lightweight rescue and recreational hovercraft. Neoteric was proud to attend and hovering our Hovertrek™ Inline Seat 4 Passenger Rescue Model and to demonstrate why Neoteric craft remain a favorite of rescue teams and recreational pilots worldwide. Founded originally in 1960 and registried in 1976, Neoteric is the original light hovercraft manufacturer and our patented reverse-thrust system gives unmatched maneuverability for precision work such as pond spraying, rescue access, and tight waterway operations.

Sugar Creek’s winding waterway, shallow shoals, and scenic banks make it a perfect venue to show the versatility of hovercraft. The craft’s soft surface footprint and ability to transition from water to land without damage make them ideal for conservation-sensitive shoots, access to isolated banks, and practical tasks like precision spraying or shoreline inspections. Six hovercraft made it all the way upstream to Turkey Run State Park about 45 miles round trip, two craft experienced mechanical difficulties on the return trip but both were successfully retrieved. Midday cruise through the covered-bridge stretch, pilots swapped tips on skirt care, throttle setups, and accessories. Several craft performed low-speed precision maneuvers to demonstrate spray and rescue capability. In the afternoon, the pilots and guests reviewed the day’s footage and discussed upcoming events in the Midwest hovercraft calendar.

Neoteric Hovercraft welcomes Wabash River Heritage Corridor Commission

Celebrating Heritage and Innovation: WRHCC Visits Neoteric Hovercraft

On May 14, 2025, Neoteric Hovercraft welcomed 20 members of the Wabash River Heritage Corridor Commission (WRHCC) to our Terre Haute facility as part of their Heritage quarterly meeting activities. The visit offered a unique blend of history, environmental stewardship, and cutting-edge innovation—highlighting the shared significance of the Wabash River to both our company’s past and the region’s future.

A Full Day Rooted in Community

The day began with a morning wetland walk at Dewey Point, followed by a mid-morning tour of Neoteric’s factory at 1649 Tippecanoe St., where WRHCC members—including President Brendan Kearns, Vice President Arin Shaver, and Secretary Dale Brier—received an up-close look at how hovercraft are designed, assembled, and tested.

As part of the tour, Chris Fitzgerald delivered an informative heritage presentation that connected the evolution of hovercraft technology with the ecological and cultural history of the Wabash corridor.

Innovation Inspired by the River

In his presentation, Fitzgerald spoke to the origins of the hovercraft, his early interest in aviation dating back to 1959, and his motivation for establishing Neoteric in Terre Haute—a choice driven by the proximity of the Wabash River and its potential for hovercraft application, pilot training and testing.

He shared anecdotes about early hovercraft testing, including a significant journey on July 29, 2015, launching from Shawnee town, Illinois, 10 miles south of the confluence of the Wabash and Ohio rivers, and continuing to Fort Recovery, Ohio on the 2^nd of August at 5pm. These moments underscored how essential the river has been to our development, testing, and community engagement said Fitzgerald.

Behind the Scenes: How Hovercraft Are Made

Visitors were treated to a rare inside look at Neoteric’s manufacturing process:

• Lightweight structural fabrication with aluminum, plastics, and fiberglass
• Skirt system testing
• Fiberglass Fabrication and part removal demonstrations
• Briggs & Stratton and aircraft engine setup and assembly

In our best year over 55 hovercraft were built, exported to 55 countries, and our largest team of 22 employees which varies with orders. Neoteric stands as a global leader in light hovercraft technology. Our largest customer to date has been in Russia, but our roots remain deeply planted along the Wabash.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Hovercraft and the Wabash

During the tour, guests learned of our plans for a new, expanded facility, which will include the U.S. Hovercraft Museum—a future destination on the Wabash that aims to educate and inspire. As Chris noted, the river isn’t just part of our history—it’s central to our future.

Hovercraft have the potential to become an iconic part of eco-tourism and historic exploration on the Wabash, supporting both recreation and conservation efforts along the corridor.

 Mansfield Fire Department, Texas: "The benefit of having the hovercraft is we do not have to send our personnel into the water to retrieve victims. It can also hover over logs, car tires and any other debris, unlike boats, that could be a hazard in the water. A hovercraft is the answer to a faster rescue - a safer rescue."

Davis County Sheriff's Office, Utah: "Our hovercraft, without question, has saved lives. Much of our county is covered by the Great Salt Lake, and when the water is low it leaves miles of mudflats boats can't reach. We can't get airboats out there. When it's extremely windy it's hard to get an aircraft or helicopter out there, and even walking out is impossible. We were putting rescuers in harm's way, but the hovercraft allows us to hover over mud, ice or water and get right to the patient - to literally reach out our hand and pull them out."

Central Fraser Valley Search & Rescue Society, Canada: "The hovercraft gets us into areas that, before, we weren't able to reach, areas that our jet boat can't get into because we ingest debris into the impeller. And the hovercraft saves us a lot of time."

North Muskegon Fire Department, Michigan: "Our hovercraft have saved more lives that all our fire engines combined. Since 1985, more than 255 people have been rescued from Muskegon area lakes using the hovercraft. More than half of them would have drowned not having the hovercraft as a safe rescue tool."

WOPR, a national water rescue organization in Poland: “Regardless of the weather, our hovercraft can fly over water, ice, mud, sand, grass or wetlands – allowing us to get to those places you can’t reach either by boat or by foot. This machine can save people under the most difficult conditions that prevent the use of a helicopter.”

Council Bluffs Fire Department, Iowa: "Our hovercraft can handle some of the most dangerous rescues that would otherwise be out of reach. It's the only vehicle able to operate on any surface; you can get it anywhere that basically nothing else can get to. With it, we're not sending first responders out into bad water or ice. We can go over it all with the hovercraft, grab the victim and bring them back."

Only one more day to see a Neoteric Rescue Hovercraft in flight at #FDIC2022!

Today is the next-to-the-last day of the FDIC. And it was a busy day at Neoteric Hovercraft’s FDIC Outdoor Booth 19403 – where every half hour, attendees watched a rescue hovercraft take flight …

Coincidentally, one FDIC attendee who visited our booth today is closely connected to Neoteric's history. Neoteric Founder/President Chris Fitzgerald (right) was a founder of the Hoverclub of America in 1974 … and visitor Michael (left) is the son of another founder of the Hoverclub. Michael has spent his life in the fire service and is now a Fire Chief.

This is just one association between fire departments and Neoteric Rescue Hovercraft. Fire Chief Michael explains why there should be closer connections between firefighters and hovercraft … 

As Maritime Reporter and Marine News reported in 2014: "Hovercraft have a growing role to play in search and rescue, commercial and military operations around the world. Hovercraft can be a practical proposition for operations in areas inaccessible to other vehicles including frozen water, mud flats, intertidal areas, shallow rivers and flooded inland areas. Perceived to be environmentally sound, as they don’t exhaust into the water, create no wash and do not disturb the sea bed, they are also economical and do not endanger marine animals as there is no propeller in the water."

There are so many more reasons why hovercraft are necessary for safe and successful search and rescue operations. In brief,  hovercraft do not suffer from outboard motor or propeller damage – which are big problems with Jon Boats, inflatables and anything that has a prop under the boat. Beneath a hovercraft there is nothing but a 9-inch deep, soft cushion of air. Because they travel above the surface on a cushion of air, hovercraft fly over obstacles rather than colliding with them. A hovercraft can fly over a bird nest full of eggs – or even a human being – without doing any harm!

 And, unlike boats, the Neoteric Hovercraft hull is filled with US Coast Guard-approved closed-cell foam, which prevents sinking.

Today at the FDIC, David Page, Director of the Prehospital Care Research Forum at UCLA, addressed attendees on “Bringing Light to the Dark.” His speech focused on three tenets: safety, service and smiles.

Page said, “Safety first, of course … So I’m on a quest to make safety less fuddy duddy and more sexy! If safety were sexy, I think more of us would think of it - in fact, some of my partners would not stop thinking of it … If safety were sexy, more of us might practice it, study it, maybe even get good at it.”

This made us recall the time a woman and her husband took their first flight on a Neoteric Hovercraft, and afterward (to the dismay of her husband!), her first comment was “That was better than sex!”

New Neoteric Hovercraft Powered by Briggs & Stratton Marine Engine

The newest Neoteric Hovercraft – the Hovertrek II – will be exclusively powered by Briggs & Stratton’s Vanguard BIG BLOCK 40.0 Gross HP EFI – marine engine.

The Hovertrek II was designed with affordability, controllability and sustainability in mind as Neoteric continues to provide rescue agencies worldwide, as well as recreational and commercial customers, with the only hovercraft available that can brake and fly in reverse.  

The craft's design features many of the advantages and innovations brought to market by Neoteric over the years, including side-by-side seating, increased thrust and low weight. 

Neoteric turned to Vanguard’s electronic fuel injection (EFI) technology to optimize fuel injection and spark timing to deliver significant fuel savings, greater efficiency and higher productivity.
